Main Stage: The Art of Selection: Choosing Winning Show Pigs

This session will provide a comprehensive guide to selecting show pigs. We will discuss key evaluation criteria, including structural correctness, balance, desirable skeletal structure, and fluid movement. Attendees will learn about common mistakes people make when selecting their animal. You will walk away feeling confident in selecting a project to compete and reach your goals.

Properly training your pigs is so important. How you train your pigs can make a project enjoyable or can leave you frustrated for months on end. Come learn about how to build a solid relationship with your pig and properly whip train so that your pig and you become an awesome team. This session will leave you feeling confident to properly break your pig and so excited to start the process of your next show season.
Receiving your pigs and getting them off to a good start is crucial to success later on. Learn about what feeds to feed that will help mellow them out and to transition them from the high protein sale prep feeds.
Come learn and feel confident in knowing how much to feed, when to bump the feed amount up, and how to feed in the early stages if you plan to feed one for a long show window.
Understanding how diseases spread and implementing biosecurity practices is important to not only keep your pigs healthy, but keep the pork industry healthy and productive. You will leave knowing practical steps you can take before and after shows to keep your pigs healthy.
If you have spent any time showing, you know that it is much better to work together than alone. Learn how to develop relationships that build each other up. Walk away knowing what you can do to make new and lasting connections.

Using the proper tools and products is really important to making your pig look and perform their best. Knowing exactly what works can save you time and money in the long run. Classes are won and lost on skin and hair. Come learn what products to use that will develop good skin and hair routines. You will leave feeling confident knowing how to gain a competitive edge with the right tools, products, and equipment that will result in compliments from the judge and give you an advantage against your competition.
Knowing how to manage your project and developing an eye for when changes need to be made during the different grow stages is important. Learning when and how to pulse is important. Come learn how to feed hogs to keep them within their skeleton, feed one that needs blown apart at the ground, and how to develop and manage chub while also staying clean fronted? You will leave feeling confident about how to identify and feed different body types, grow patterns, and structural needs.
Have you ever had a pig that doesn’t eat well or goes off feed? If you haven’t you are one of the few! Sometimes eating issues can turn into a long term nightmare. Pigs that are healthy and eat are the ones that win. Gut health can either make or break your project. The question isn’t, if you will encounter gut or skin health issues. The question is when will you and are you prepared to manage those issues. Come learn how to manage gut health, skin issues, and other pig health related issues, so that you can get the most out of your project.
You have shown at a high level. You love showing and the opportunities it provides. But, what is “next” in your journey? Are you passionate about bettering yourself? Do you want to be involved in leadership opportunities that will open up doors for your future?

Banners and ribbons are handed out at the show, but winning happens in the backyard. Consistently practicing showmanship skills in the backyard is crucial to help reach your goals. Come learn how to develop a walking routine that will set you up for success in the ring for both showmanship and in your breeding or market class.
Knowing when to start additives, what additives to use, and how much to use can take your pig to the next level. Come learn how to manage the final 30 days prior to loading up for your target show. You will leave feeling confident to have your pig looking its best when you load it up and head to the show.
We all only have 24 hours in a day. Maximizing your time and money is so important. Come learn how to develop a daily routine that is effective, encourages teamwork, saves money, encourages pig health, makes going out to the barn enjoyable. You will leave feeling confident to implement strategies that will lighten the workload and make the project enjoyable for your entire family.
It takes a village to make it to be successful, reach your goals, and experience once in a lifetime opportunities. Utilizing a pig jockey and a feeder can help you reach your goals. But, how do you find the right person that is the right fit? How do you communicate clearly and ask the right questions to make improvements? What can you expect a jockey and or feeder to do to assist you? Leave this session feeling confident about your role and a feeders role that can take you to the next level of competition.

You have worked so hard at home now it is time to set yourself apart from others in the show ring. Come learn what to do that will set the tone and leave a lasting impression in the judge’s mind. Showing with a bunch of other showmen can be chaotic, but you will walk away knowing how to navigate the ring in a way to communicate that you are “different,” in complete control, and are one with your partner.
Managing fill and hydration at the show is crucial to compete at your absolute best. Learn how to feed and hydrate to set yourself up for success. How do you feed if your show has a weigh back. How do you feed if your show does not have a weigh back?
You will leave feeling confident that you know how to feed to give yourself the greatest opportunity to place your best at the show.
It is fun to go out to the barn when your pigs are healthy and thriving. Pig projects are awesome, but can present some significant health challenges. Come learn about the importance of proactive health management. Learn to identify and diagnose common pig health issues. You will leave knowing what health challenges you may face and how to respond. Be prepared by knowing what you should have in your medicine cabinet so that you can be proactive.
Attention all experienced Showman. This competition is designed for YOU!
There will be a mix of questions that test your knowledge about showmanship, animal health, pig breeds, etc.
Come and compete for the right to be named 2025 Show Pig Conference Showman of the Year!
The winner will receive a banner and a cash prize. We know that you all love to compete at a high level. Come show the entire nation what you know.
